The Mate desktop can show the current temperature and weather next to its clock. To do this you have to pick your location from a list and it is far from comprehensive.
It uses weather data intended for the air travel industry and actually gives that for the nearest airfield that provides METAR data using ICAO codes. I’m in Sheffield and the nearest place on the list is Leeds using the weather for Yeadon; Finningley would make more sense but that isn’t on the list. You can however add places, though it isn’t obvious how.
First you need to find the code for your nearest suitable airfield. A list can be seen here. A quick Google search will provide the co-ordinates of your chosen one and confirm that it is still active.

Now you’ve got that information open dconf Editor and navigate to the key /org/mate/panel/objects/clock/prefs/cities
and change the underlined details.
In my case I entered those for Finningley:--
['<location name="" city="Sheffield" timezone="Europe/London" latitude="53.47527" longitude="-1.004167" code="EGCN" current="true"/>']
