Dutch Tool Chest
I made this chest a couple of years ago following plans from the October 2013 issue of Popular Woodworking magazine.
Being me I deviated from them a bit. The biggest change was using ¾" MDF and screws instead of nails and pine. I also made it slightly taller and installed the bottom in a housing so that the castors would be partly hidden.
For all that I liked it I found I wasn't using it much because the front door was such a pain. To open it the lid had to be lifted and two wooden locking bars pulled out at which point the front would fall off. I did toy with the idea of splitting it up the middle and putting hinges on the sides but that would still have meant bending right down to see what was where and things would retain their tendency to fall out.
Drawers seemed a much better bet so I got on and fitted those.
Were I to build it again I wouldn't fit the shelf in the lower cupboard and install three drawers.
