ES File Explorer
ES File Explorer used to be the best Android file manager around. Unfortunately recent versions have become bloated with extra functions, several of which are extremely intrusive and pop-up even when it isn’t in use. It is also now rammed with advertising.
The rot set in with version 4 when the user interface had a makeover but it still wasn’t too bad and was useable up to version 4.1.2.4. Personally I stick with 3.2.5.5.
These old versions are available as APK files from https://es-file-explorer.en.uptodown.com/android/old which you can sideload onto your device. The most important thing to do afterwards is stop it from updating to the current version.
In ES File Explorer’s settings find Update Settings and de-select Auto-Check. Also find it under My Apps in the Play Store, tap it and when the next screen comes up tap the three dots in the top right corner and switch off auto update.
